BioGenerator Ventures creates, builds, and invests in companies that are solving important problems in healthcare and agriculture. BioGenerator Ventures is an early-stage investor in St. Louis-based life science companies. Uniquely, BioGenerator is the only investor that invests exclusively in St. Louis companies.
We invest in therapeutics, diagnostics, research tools, and agtech, with opportunistic investments in adjacent sectors. Investing across multiple early stages (Pre-Seed, Seed-Series A) and developing strategic relationships with qualified investors on behalf of portfolio companies. As of 2025, we have invested in over 130 companies across the human health and agriculture technology sectors.
Jim brings a range of valuable experience as an entrepreneur, investor, and industry leader — across St. Louis' bioscience strengths in medicine, healthcare, and agriculture —most recently at Abbott Laboratories and at Virta Health. In 1999 he founded Divergence, a pioneering ag biotech start-up and early success story for St. Louis entrepreneurship. Upon Divergence's acquisition by Monsanto in 2011, Jim joined the Monsanto Growth Ventures team making investments in emerging ag technology.
Prior to founding Canopy Biosciences, Winkeler was a Senior Investment Analyst for BioGenerator Ventures. Crystal co-founded Canopy Biosciences in the BioGenerator Labs and was instrumental in the growth of the company, including PE-backed acquisitions of both Zellkraftwerk and Core Diagnostics. She led efforts in fundraising, technology sourcing and licensing, commercialization, operations, and business development.
She was previously Director of Research at the local agtech startup Pluton Biosciences, where she was responsible for development of the research team and research functions in microbiology, molecular biology, and bioinsecticide discovery, from company founding to Series A. Ann holds a PhD in Molecular Genetics and Genomics from Washington University, where she was a Monsanto Graduate Fellow.
