🔥 BERNIE'S HOT TAKE

Flat6Labs just pulled a classic VC move - splitting their accelerator and fund operations into separate entities (F6 Group) to chase bigger checks and institutional credibility. The good: they're the undisputed MENA seed kings with 398 portfolio companies and some legitimate wins like Instabug (16x return) and Hawaya (acquired by Match Group). Dina and Ramez know the ecosystem cold and have the founder relationships that matter. The reality check: they're stretching thin with programs across 8+ countries and the new F6 Ventures structure feels like empire-building over focus. Their $5-10K checks are tiny even by emerging market standards, and they're notorious for taking accelerator-sized equity stakes (6-8%) for seed-sized investments. Founders love the programs but often complain about the onerous post-investment reporting and the fact that follow-on support can be hit-or-miss depending on which geography you're in.

KEY TAKEAWAYS
  • Best for: First-time MENA founders who need hands-on ecosystem support and can stomach small checks
  • Watch out for: High equity asks relative to investment size and geographic resource allocation gaps
  • Known for: Massive regional footprint, strong accelerator programs, and being founder-friendly post-exit
Investment Thesis

F6 Ventures enters the market with a clear thesis: pre-seed and seed funding in the Middle East and Africa remains structurally undercapitalized. While later-stage capital has grown, early-stage founders still struggle to access institutional support at the idea-to-product stage. We back exceptional founders from idea-stage all the way to Series A, combining early capital with strategic support and a commitment to long-term partnership. By investing early in Pre-Seed to Pre-Series A rounds, we help founders cover initial costs, develop their product, and take it to market.

Key Partners
Dina el-Shenoufy
CEO of F6 Group, Co-Founder & General Partner of F6 Ventures

F6 Ventures will see El Shenoufy and Ramez El Serafy (LinkedIn) — both original co-founders of Flat6Labs — leading it. To understand more about what this means, we spoke to co-founder and general partner of F6 Ventures Dina El Shenoufy (LinkedIn). Past Role: Sawari Ventures, Investment Manager. She leads F6 Group's expansion to $200M AUM and Africa-focused investments.

Ramez El-Serafy
Co-Founder & General Partner of F6 Ventures

It would be another six months before Flat6Labs could be launched and they enlisted Ramez El-Serafy to lead the accelerator. Today, El-Serafy has held the chief executive position for a decade, seeing more than two thousand entrepreneurs go through the accelerator, expand to six countries and grow his team to 68 people. Past Role: Sarmady - a Vodafone company, Mobile Apps Business Manager. Known for founder-centric approach and ecosystem building across MENA.

Ahmed El Alfi
Founder, Flat6Labs, Sawari Ventures

Launched in 2011, at Cairo, by Sawari Ventures, the firm was founded by Ahmed El Alfi and Hany Al Sonbaty, both founders of Sawari Ventures, and previously experienced at EFG Hermes Private Equity. A veteran of Egyptian VC, co-founded Sawari Ventures and established Flat6Labs as the region's premier seed accelerator. Instrumental in creating the MENA startup ecosystem.

Hany Al Sonbaty
Founder and Chairman, F6 Group

Once Hany Sonbaty and Ahmed Alfi launched their venture capital firm, Sawari Ventures, in Egypt back in 2010, the pair were often hounded by enthusiastic entrepreneurs who sought their investment, advice and mentorship. "I was always annoyed, they would corner me at conferences and say 'if only I had money, I would be able to do this'," says Sonbaty, who thought an accelerator programme would be best for these entrepreneurs to see them "prove their point". Co-founded Sawari Ventures and conceptualized Flat6Labs after being overwhelmed by early-stage entrepreneurs seeking support.
