Flourish is driven by a core thesis about creating systemic change and building fair financial systems. Their investment thesis is to not only back companies that have the potential to provide a commercial return, but also those it believes can "create systemic change" and help "build a more fair financial system."
Flourish writes first checks ranging from $2 million to $7 million and makes about 6 to 10 new investments a year, typically as seed or Series A investor. They've backed 71 startups across five continents since inception with about half of the fund's capital deployed in the U.S. While they claim a global fintech focus, their actual African exposure appears concentrated in large-scale fintech winners like Flutterwave and FairMoney.
Carr was Flourish's inaugural employee on the African continent and previously served as Head of Strategic Finance and Interim CFO at Lori, a logistics tech startup, plus covered Africa at Quona Capital and was an associate at Boston Consulting Group. He spent six months seconded to the Sierra Leone government as the most senior official leading data management during the 2015 Ebola outbreak. Founders value Carr's empathetic approach, stemming from his prior experience as CFO at Lori, which provided him with firsthand insight into the entrepreneurial journey.
